What is a MIAM (Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting)?
A MIAM (Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting) is usually the first step if you’re dealing with a family dispute—such as separation, child arrangements, or financial matters.
It’s a confidential, one-to-one meeting with a trained family mediator, designed to help you understand your options and decide whether mediation is the right path for you.
Why do I need a MIAM?
In most cases, attending an MIAM is a legal requirement before making an application to the family court. This has been in place since 2014 to encourage families to resolve issues outside of court where possible.
The aim is simple: to explore whether disputes can be resolved more quickly, cost-effectively, and with less stress through mediation.
What happens during a MIAM?
A MIAM is not a mediation session itself. Instead, it’s an opportunity to:
